Zexal AU Notes
There's two worlds, Barian and Astral. Astral World is the pure, spiritual heaven for the super elite souls with no chaos in them, while Barian World is the brief stopping point for everyone with chaos in them before they're reborn. Don Thousand comes from Astral World, gets kicked out because he has chaos in his soul, and tries to fight them for reasons unknown. He's beaten by an automatic defense being known as Astral. Astral won but was severely wounded, and Don Thousand split into 101 pieces, 100 of which scattered across the world as the Numbers. The final one (Numbers 0) became the Reaper form of Don Thousand, acting as his only active fragment.
Astral tries to seek out the Numbers. He manages to obtain 49 of them, but Numbers 96 manages to beat and absorb him. However, Astral has a self-defense mechanism that seals him and the other 49 behind the Door. Because these pieces also hold information relating to the location of a source of immense power, the Astral World doesn't destroy the Key (also because it has self-repair functions). They believe this source of power to be the Numeron Code, created by the dragon that made the universe, but it's actually his egg, the last thing he created after exerting all of his power to do so.
Seven of the remaining Numbers, the Mythyrian ones, enter the people who will later become the Barian Emperors. The remaining 43 go dormant, hibernating to avoid the chance of being sealed themselves. Other than Vector, the other people are not confirmed yet, they might be replaced. The Reaper does his thing, winds up driving them nuts and making them into the Emperors.
(INSERT EMPEROR DATA HERE
-Something happens to kill off two of them, probably Vector, who knows?)
-Yuma's mother Hiraku has a near-death experience that winds up having her connect to the Astral World briefly and get given the Key because they can't do anything with it and need their help, but they don't explain, just show her some stuff he can't understand. She gives it to her son Yukuro to comfort him when she finds him crying.
-Vector convinces Dr Faker to sacrifice Tron and Hiraku to save Haruto, then gives his son the ability to grab Numbers and tells Faker to gather them all for Haruto's sake and also you're sacrificing the world by doing this, have fun, toodles~
-Meanwhile Tron eventually returns in a deranged child form and his children begin Numbers hunting too, with the power of the crests.
Yukoro is an average duelist and fairly withdrawn but loves kids. After finding Mako is harassing younger kids and taking their decks, he gets involved. He stops him taking the Key, but offers his deck, and... basically gets the living shite kicked out of him during the duel. His determination to win triggers the Key, which brings him to the door, where he accepts the Door's vaguely threatening offer and opens it hoping it'll help him beat the fucker.
96 is now tied to the Key. While the other Numbers cards scatter, he's stuck with Yukuro. Because he absorbed Astral, he has some issues related to that, one of which being the desire to reclaim the Numbers because he feels like they'll do something good for him. Combined with his belief that he'll get stronger if he absorbs them, and his desire to not be bored, he makes collecting them his goal - to the likely dread of the Astral World.
Yukuro is able to win thanks to Numbers 39: Hope attaching itself to his deck.
Despite this, he refuses to go along with the Numbers Hunting, rejecting 96 entirely. However after Numbers 34: Tera Byte, forces their teacher to make a virus bomb that'll cause havoc with all of the technology in Heartland City - including the hospitals, banks and other essential systems - he flings himself headfirst into stopping them and only gets more determined to keep going the more people he sees being hurt or put in danger by them.
He winds up befriending several of the people he saves.
At one point, however, Yukuro discovers a hostage scene in progress while at the mall and realizes a Numbers is at fault. However, by the time he gets there, Kaitou has already beaten him and ripped out the Numbers - along with his soul. Yukuro is horrified when 96 tells him what's happened to the man and wants to find out who's responsible, but there's no clues. Yet.
Later, he knocks his friend out of the way of a truck, winding up in the path of it, but before it hits... time stops. The very rain in the air stops. Everything has frozen in time. Kaitou strides up, challenging him and using a Duel Anchor (an energy whip) to tie the two of them together by the wrists. The duel goes poorly, but Kaitou abruptly abandons it and leaves once he receives a message that his brother has collapsed and is asking for him.
Yukuro later meets a scarred man who can hear the voices of Duel Monster Spirits and is convinced that they shouldn't take risks that'll get their monsters killed because of their fear. Yukuro teaches him that a beloved card is willing to face that fear to protect their master, and that if they're choosing to fight, it's okay.
Kaitou then steals the key. Mako, who's only just come back to school in an attempt to rebuild his life, intercedes, but has his soul ripped out. Yukuro is suitably aghast and distressed, but his friends figure out a way to track it down using a former victim's programming skills. Just in time, too, since 96 is fighting Kaitou to stop him getting inside of the Key. 96 manages to activate a power of Astral's, merging himself with Yukuro, and initiating their special ZEXAL mode. Because Astral is gone, it's no longer the Shining Draw, but instead a shadow field that weakens the opponent and powers up Yukuro, as well as having other effects such as allowing him to hear the voices of his monsters if he strains and allows him to reshuffle his deck at will. Kaitou winds up forcing a draw in the end, releasing Mako's soul and escaping. Yukuro promptly collapses once it's done and is brought back to safety. He bonds a little more with 96 as a result of the aftercare.
Yukuro gets given a weird vision by Kaitou of three suns in the sky, and instructions to join the World Dueling Championship, which he has to enter and then earn the pieces to qualify for.
Mako gets convinced to take part via IV being a prick and taunting him into it.
Haruto runs away because he's upset over Kaitou having to go through hell for him and he just wants to live his last days happily with his brother like they used to. Yukuro finds him and winds up taking him home while they try to figure out what to do and they have cute bonding... before V turns up in a helicopter, claiming to be there for Haruto and giving Yukuro odd looks, and Haruto goes with him. Yukuro heads back just in time to find out that V wasn't on Kaitou's side and that nobody knows why Haruto made no protest in going with a stranger.
When Kaitou tracks his brother down, Yukuro insists on going with him because he likes Haruto. Since Kaitou doesn't have time to force him to stop and is more focused on his brother, he just goes ahead. While Tron works on absorbing Haruto's power, IV and III are waiting for them there, but refuse to fight Kaitou alone, so Yukuro is dragged in against Kaitou's wishes. The two of them clash heavily during it, Yukuro snapping at him and speaking in tones reminiscent of one dealing with a child as Kaitou gets increasingly more irritating to deal with. At the mention of his last name, IV and the watching V react heavily to it, but offer no explanation. Haruto awakens, helping Kaitou by empowering his deck. The two of them defeat III and IV.
Kaitou attempts to rip out their souls, but Yukuro smacks his hand aside since he can extract the Numbers without hurting them and tries it himself, only to find it blocked by their Crests. III quickly leaves. IV hesitates, but V orders him to go, then telekinetically drops the now-drained Haruto for them and then leaves, after giving Yukuro an intense look. Yukuro is left feeling like that guy knows him and wondering what the hell is going on.
A few days later, the Arclights are all at home. III brings up Yukuro and mentions he wants to meet him, Tron agrees. V is adverse to this, but Tron overrides him. V falls into silent brooding.
Yukuro finds out Mako is beating the hell out of random duelists due to his anger at IV and duels him into calming down while III watches from the shadows. Mako has a little bit of a breakdown at him, but agrees in the end that what he's doing isn't going to help. He leaves Yukuro without much understanding of what's going on.
V expresses concern to Tron, but Tron waves it off, assuming he's worried that III won't want to come home when he can be with good, normal people. Tron tells him that III is kind, and he'll come back. V falls silent, and Tron prods him to learn what's wrong. V finally just tells him the full name. Tron initially doesn't connect it, until the two names click together in his head and he realizes. V shows him a picture, which just confirms it.
III breaks into Yukuro's house, checks out his room and startles his grandma who calls Yukuro home. The two chat, though III can probably easily tell how Yukuro dodges any too personal questions. He'll talk about his mom. He'll talk about her ruins exploring. But he's very carefully avoiding any bond questions. III asks about how he throws himself into duels, Yukuro says -- without thinking -- "Well, I have to be passionate about something."
Grandma then calls Yukuro down for lunch and invites III to stay for it.
III notices Yukuro's grandma doting on him, Yukuro just relaxing, and generally just how quiet and happy it is. Grandma cheerfully teasing him, Yukuro trying to be above it all like his unknown half-bro and not rise to it... and it reminds him of what he's lost. He runs out in tears, and Yukuro follows him. When they catch up, Yukuro asks him to duel. He wants to know who III really is, what his feelings are, why they took Haruto, what they're doing. III gets defensive but tells him he'll duel him, just not then. Though Yukuro doesn't know it, he's wanting to seek power from Tron.
Back at home, V and Tron are trying to figure out what to do when IV walks in. V confirms with him what the situation is... that that's their youngest brother. And they don't have a clue what to do, but they need to figure it out fast.
When III comes in to ask about the power, Tron puts him off for the moment, and after III is gone for now they hit on an idea. While III is sent off on a mission, V goes out to snag Yukuro, kidnapping him, blindfolding him and tying him up, and brings him home to meet the family.
Yukuro was frightened at first, then quickly became angry at the claim that the small child in front of him was his father. However, a home DNA test soon proved he wasn't lying. Tron asked him to step out of the WDC, telling him that they didn't want to fight him, but they had no choice, they had to kill Dr. Faker and Mayor Heartland, and they'd kill anyone who got in the way. Yukuro was aghast and berated them for it, until IV snapped that Faker was the reason his mother was dead. V quickly silenced him and shut down the conversation, seeing there was going to be no resolution, taking him home after a brief chat with his father. V left a note with him, telling him that his mother was in the Astral World, along with their phone number.
Tron tells III that he'll be fighting his younger brother, and refuses to give him the power he wants. III goes off to fight anyway, and the two of them clash over their goals and unwillingness to compromise in an uncompromisable situation. III uses his crest to seal 96 away, but the effort puts a massive strain on his body.
Hiraku's spirit manages to free 96 with the help of the Numbers, sending him back to help her son, but as the duel ends, III simply collapses. Yukuro panicks, not knowing what to do, but before he can call anyone or do something to help, III vanishes, teleported back to their home. Tron gently tells him he shouldn't have pushed himself so far, and holds his hand while he falls asleep. Hiraku's spirit speaks to him gently too, soothing him. For the rest of the tournament, III is recovering and isn't involved.
Yukuro initially decides not to go to the party for the duelists, but his friends beg him to use his invite to get them in, so he does. Kaitou finds out that he's at his limit, but insists on going ahead anyway. While waiting to get into the party, 96 tells Yukuro about Heartland, the isolated area where it's being held and where the tournament will be. Yukuro wants to know how he knows, but it turns out that III left his Numbers behind when he collapsed and he absorbed them, along with the information they had.
He notices Kaitou and V, and IV and Mako, having conflicts but doesn't want to approach either first, though he wants to talk to IV. Neither of them appear to notice him and he has noticed V is acting like he doesn't know him at all. Mayor Heartland starts to introduce the duelists but he doesn't even get to the first one before the lights go out. Spotlights turn on and Tron shows up, does the cute child act, kneeling in front of Mayor Heartland, then tells him he's going to kill him. After which he exclaims about how he loves cake, calls Yukuro his "big brother" and says he wants to meet him in the finals, stares at 96... then the spotlights on him go out. When the lights come back on, Tron is gone.
Tron then pays off three of the other duelists to go after Kaitou.
At the WDC, Mayor Heartland explains the rules, and they all go off on the coaster. The people Tron paid off go after Kaitou. Yukuro attempts to help, but Kaitou tries to force him off. The three are eventually defeated thanks to Gauche and Droite helping him. Meanwhile Tron is using his crest to see what the spells and traps in his way are so he can avoid any that don't benefit him. Once they're down to 14, the coaster takes them to an area with four zones with field effects and tells them to find someoen to 1v1 with.
Gauche goes after V, realizing he's the one who took Haruto. V almost beats him, but Yukuro intercedes. Tron tells V to disengage, which he does. Droite forces Kaitou out of the way so she can face down Tron. Though she winds up putting him in what she thinks is an inescapable combo, Yukuro and 96 arrive to see that he's very well prepared for it. Tron sets the place on fire and begins to drain her memories, taunting her about it, but stops once the horrified (and restrained by 96) Yukuro screams at him to, since he doesn't need to do it to win anyway. He leaves her traumatised and with a lot of memories missing, but with the memory of who she loves intact.
Meanwhile Kaitou and V head for the Space Zone. Kaitou addresses him as Chris, then corrects himself. He quietly wonders why V left, since he just walked out some years ago and never came back. The duels are still not being shown due to "technical difficulties" so they're free to show whatever they wish. Orbital 7 drops in to land on Yukuro, asking him to take him to Kaitou because he's worried. Yukuro reluctantly agrees because he's not in a good place after what happened to Droite. V muses on Haruto and the fact that when he found out the truth, his heart became full of hatred and the desire for revenge. Kaitou says he's gonna get revenge for Haruto. V summons his XYZ monster... and nothing appears. Kaitou is suspicious, but when he attacks... his attack is absorbed with a black hole. V's attacks come out of a white hole, and Kaitou is very lost. V just tells him that his dueling's evolved far beyond Kaitou's imagination.
Yukuro crashes because the coaster won't obey him any more, but is right where he wants to be anyway. He tells Kaitou about Droite, but Kaitou is as serious as ever. He claims he doesn't care, but clearly does. Yukuro yells at him for it, but V intterupts. He says that it must be fate that they're all gathered here. He then tells him he'll tell him everything he knows before he makes another move. Kaitou tries to insist on the duel continuing, but V refuses, insisting on telling them everything... starting with what happened ten years ago when his father disappeared. About Dr. Faker being Kaitou's father. About Faker and Byron having worked together to investigate the possibility of a gateway to alternate dimensions. About Byron suggesting his friend/girlfriend Hiraku joins in since she's studying something similar.
Faker had Hiraku brought in, and they headed off to where she suggested going based off of the combination of their data. Faker meanwhile got a message from someone telling him what to do when he gets there. After three days, and evading countless traps, Faker tricked them into stepping on runes that paralyse them. He told them they were going to be sacrificed to open the door. Hiraku protested him sacrificing his friend, but Faker said that friends are useless and that Byron should be happy to be sacrificed because it was the best an "average person" like him could hope for. Then he collapsed the stairs, pitching them down. Hiraku managed to grab a rock and tried to pull Byron up, but they both fell into the portal beneath them. Byron became warped after wandering for years through that hellish landscape and is now Tron.
Yukuro is in shock through all of this, but Kaitou seems unaffected. He says he's only got Haruto and he's fighting for him, not Faker. V says he'll get revenge and reveals the gigantic space colony and its' many, many tricks. Kaitou says he can beat it since V taught him to duel. V tells him why that is.
After Byron disappeared, his family got ripped apart. His brothers were dumped in an orphanage. He tried to find Hiraku to get her help, but she was gone. His second mother was missing. His father was missing. His half-brother wasn't to be found. He stayed with Faker solely to find out what happened, and befriended Haruto and Kaitou there. He says that he never thought they'd end up this way but he won't go easy on him because Kaitou's in his way. V then easily beat Kaitou down. Yukuro tries to get Kaitou to take care of himself since if he dies here Haruto won't have his help, but Kaitou resists and tells him to stop getting involved. V comments that it's an odd choice for Yukuro to be on Kaitou's side considering, but he says that he wants to be Kaitou's friend, not his enemy.
V asks if Yukuro can really forgive Faker, considering Faker threw his dad's friendship away, but Yukuro has no answer. V then tells them when he learnt the truth he simply left, throwing Kaitou aside when he tried to ask what was wrong. Kaitou tells him to shut up, and V comments that he can't understand their hatred. Though V could easily win, he holds off because he wants to beat Galaxy Eyes directly. V tells Kaitou that he must be tired, and he'll free him from his pain and the suffering he's going through for Haruto, calling it the last good thing he can do for him. Kaitou tells him he's never considered anything he went through suffering because his only purpose is to protect him, since he's everything to him. He then plays a card V doesn't know, to V's shock - the only card he ever got from his dad. V asks why he'd use it since he hates his dad, but Kaitou says he's like V. He'll do anything to protect his family, just like V will.
Yukuro thinks to himself that it shows he had faith in his family that he kept it.
Kaitou then wipes out V's life points in one move in one turn. V says that he knows that at the end of revenge, there's nothing - and he always knew that, right from the start. Kaitou calls him Chris again and V muses that he hasn't heard his name in a long time. He says he wants to save his father, but his father feels nothing but the desire for revenge now. He starts crying, telling Kaitou that he couldn't stop him, but that's what it means to be someone's child. Kaitou tells him that's not true, and that once he's saved Haruto, he'll deal with Faker himself, because he's fighting his father as well as the Numbers Holders. V calls him strong. Kaitou says he'll take V's feelings with him. V calls them all his brothers and Yukuro gently asks if it's okay if he inherits V's feelings too. Kaitou, who's figured out the family connection by now, just nods.
V then vanishes into the portal, leaving his Numbers behind. V turns up at III's bedside, collsping there. Yukuro quietly promises that he'll save Tron.
There are four duelists left, and only two slots for the semifinals. Yukuro is devastated. He feels all mixed up. He's angry at Faker, angry at Tron, but his dad's also clearly not right in the head so he's confused in his feelings. When he was thinking about his dad, he never expected this. 96 senses a crest in use and the two think it might be Tron, so they go towards it. Instead they find Mako and IV in the magma zone. IV claims he lured him there. Because they're in the magma field, Mako's at a disadvantage since he's water themed. Mako is surprised by Yukuro' sudden arrival, but IV isn't. Tron appears briefly, telling IV to fight his hardest, but nobody but IV can see him.
The feed cuts out mid-duel due to Tron's giggling sabotage of the cameras. Mako tells IV that he knows IV was the one who hurt his sister and he won't forgive him for it. Yukuro is surprised to see him wielding a Numbers again. IV manages to push Mako back even with it and he barely survives the next turn. IV mutters that he knows he's meant to be breaking Mako, that's why he hurt his sister and got him expelled from dueling. He says that he did it all for Tron. Mako asks about Tron, but there's no response. IV starts thinking about how Tron was talking earlier about making use of Mako and gets angry at the thought that his dad might not think he can handle it. He tortures Mako in the duel, and Yukuro tries to interfere, but is suddenly entrapped in chains to the point of being entirely immobile, courtesy of Tron. He yells at him to let him go, and IV yells at him not to, leaving them both looking like they're crazy to everyone else. 96 tries to break the chains, but he can't.
Yukuro tells his brother that dueling is meant to be fun, not torture, but IV's too angry to listen. He just says that Mako needs to suffer more. Mako, meanwhile, is trying not to get possessed.
IV says Mako has no chance of winning, but he's acting erratically. He's hurting badly. Two of his siblings are hospitalized in their house, the third is trying to stop them, and his dad's insane. He mentions that his dad always greeted them with a smile - until he came back like that. He says that his dad had become cold, but they'd still followed him. That he'd killed Mako's sister for him. Mako tells him that even if he acts like a victim, he won't forgive him because it was his own actions even if it was someone else's orders, but IV says he won't run away. He says he'll win, because if Faker dies, Tron will surely come back to normal. He says that even when he was doing inhumane things, it was always for Tron. He was always thinking of him. However, after his next draw fails, he begins to worry about Mako coming in from behind to defeat him. He summons a Numbers that'll automatically win the game if it runs out of Overlay units, and who can detach one each turn, putting a time limit on the duel.
Feeling pressured, Mako finally accepts the Numbers' power, but is able to resist losing his mind to it. IV is defeated before the Numbers runs out of Overlay units.
Lying on the ground, IV apologizes to Mako. He says he honestly didn't know the card he was given by Tron would set the building on fire. He tried to get Mako's sister out, but she was injured and that's how his face was scarred. IV begs Mako not to hate his dad, telling him that if he hates someone, he should hate him. He asks him to save his dad, telling him if he's defeated he might turn back to normal, and then portals out, telling Mako that he and his brothers will be waiting for Tron to return to normal. Tron is suspiciously silent on this. He releases Yukuro and vanishes to follow him home. Yukuro tries to tell Mako that they're all just victims, but Mako's in too bad of a mood for even him to help and brushes him off. Yukuro can't help but think that there's no outcome of this situation that will make anyone happy. He reinforces his determination to beat Tron.
Yukuro is starting to lose his motivation. He's suffering badly, and not sure if he's doing the right thing. When he asks 96, 96 is undeniably unhelpful, admitting he doesn't know what the right answer is, but stopping Tron will save lives even if it doesn't return him to normal.
Yukuro notices his deck is missing. One of his friends remembers there's a GPS function that can be used to track it via his duel disk, so he goes to follow it. However, it's in Heartland and the place is locked down. Seeing the trashbots have a way of entering, they sneak in through it, but find it more dangerous than they expected since the trash is all dumped into a giant converter machine.
Tron is talking to someone via a portal. He says he'll have all the Numbers the next day, and it's sad that he had to sacrifice his kids, but he's proud of them for going that far for him. He mentions his concern about Yukuro. Meanwhile Mako is thinking about Tron while out and about late at night. Tron appears in front of him and lures Mako to a quiet area where nobody can hear him scream and does... something that makes him scream.
Yukuro and the others manage to get out of the machine, but 96 is getting visions from it. Seems something is happening to the Astral World as a result. He senses Haruto up above and they head up. Security bots stop them, duels commence. The Numbers Club holds them off while Yukuro and 96 go up to see Haruto. Haruto has yet to wake up in all this time. However he manages to yank Yukuro into his dream, where he's reliving his happy days with younger Kaitou. He asks them to save Kaitou because he's too weak to and he can't get out of here. 96 realizes that Haruto's consciousness is buried very deep, and makes the connection that Kaitou is trying to save Haruto with the Numbers. Yukuro's head hurts from trying to process everything, and he's not sure what to do, but he wants to do both - to help Haruto and collect the Numbers without hurting everyone.
A giant hologram of Faker's head pops up to tell them that he made a deal with the Barian World. If he destroys the Astral World, he'll be able to rule the world, and that his children are just sacrifices (because Faker is like his fucking name, he never tells the TRUTH). He says that survival can only happen if you give up important things. Then he opens a hole in the floor and drops Yukuro down it. Yukuro is not impressed. His deck then drops down onto him and he leaves to go back home and decides to just forget this goddamn night ever happened.
The Semifinals begin! The Duel Tower rises from the ground via a gigantic hatch and it turns out Mako and Yukuro are first up! Mayor Heartland is heaping praise on Yukuro's head for being an unknown that popped out of nowhere. Mako turns up full of fire and harshness, determined to take him down so that he can move on. Yukuro is worried by the way he's acting. He tries to talk him down but Mako isn't having it. Tron shows up in his mind to ask him to stand down, but Yukuro can't. There's too much at stake.
Mako, meanwhile, seems desperate to beat Yukuro so he can move past him. Yukuro tries to talk him down, but Mako is after Kaitou. Tron has brainwashed him so that he sees Faker as the one behind his sister's hospitalization. As the duel continues, Tron tries to convince Yukuro to either crush Mako or surrender and let him go, even using low moves like bringing up their relationship and that "Papa doesn't want to fight you", but Yukuro isn't having any of it. He manages to stall Mako long enough for him to realize that Yukuro's telling the truth about him being brainwashed, but the Numbers he's carrying takes the opportunity to seize control instead. Mako, having experienced this possession before, manages to break it long enough to trigger an effect that uses a life point cost and break the stalemate by sacrificing himself. While 96 takes the Numbers away, Mako passes out, leaving Tron furious. Mako's taken away by a medical helicopter.
Zexal II
BARIAN INVASION CHANGES:
The Astral World is trying to destroy the Barian World in retaliation for what Faker was doing. The Barians come to Earth to try to find a way to get rid of them, going after Yukuro to try to get the information from the Numbers and use that. However, their relationship is much less hostile, especially once they discover that Yukuro has no interest in destroying them, and later, that the fragments of Don Thousand are starting to try to take over and corrupt him into trying to destroy the Astral World too.
ENDING:
Yukuro and 96 find the dragon egg, and it talks to them, giving Yukuro options. Yukuro picks for the Astral and Barian Worlds to be merged into one afterlife, a peaceful one, and that everyone who died for him could come back to life and live happily, and 96 too. The egg tells him that it can do that... but that's a massive wish, and it requires a massive cost. Yukuro says he doesn't care, he'd give his life, just do it. The egg asks if he's willing to destroy his soul for it.
He says yes.
So it agrees.
Yukuro blacks out, thinking of everyone and sad he won't see them again... and then wakes up in a hospital bed with a frantic Alit and III there. Everyone's alive, the Barians are human (but have magical powers/can shift to the other form freely). Tron didn't really get fixed, but there's no risk to his mind anymore. Yukuro's confused...
...and then 96, in a human form he can freely shift in and out of, leans on his bed and tells him that when he passed out, the hatchling that came from the egg couldn't do it. >> Yukuro's will and love were too much for it to destroy, so it instead destroyed itself. Egg is gone. That power's gone forever. But all that he wished ended up coming true.
One of the Barians (Alit?) says that even everyone got a second chance. Yukuro confusedly asked why he repeated that. Someone holds up a mirror.
Yukuro's eyes have changed... to blue and red. Don Thousand's eye color.

The protagonist is named Akiyama Yukuro (暁山 遊黒).
His dad is now his mother. She's named Akiyama Hiraku (暁山 拓). She was in a relationship with Tron from which Yukuro was born, but wasn't able to marry him at the time as Tron had three children of his own and she wasn't ready to be a mother to four when she just had her first (accidental) child and was learning how to deal with it. Tron supported her emotionally and monetarily and his two eldest knew her, but the youngest was considered unready to be introduced just yet due to his age. They were both often busy, Tron with SCIENCE and Hiraku with her many explorations of ancient ruins. The two of them were working hard to try to make things work out so that they could eventually merge the two families.
The disappearance of Byron Arclight has been moved back to ten years ago.
Shark has been replaced with Mako Kishinuma, who gradually over the course of the first Zexal series grows to become more of a support for Yukuro. He acts as the middle ground between Kaitou and Yukuro's friend group - less reactive and more serious, but supportive and approachable as well. Mako's discomfort with relying on others and his vengefulness regarding his sister act as stalling blocks in their friendship, but doesn't break it, and each time a block is passed, the two become closer friends, to the point that Mako is someone he can rely on by the start of Zexal II.
Story
